Often, this is due to hedonic adaptation, aka the “hedonic treadmill”. This is our tendency to adapt to positive changes very quickly, while our baseline happiness stays the same.

In other words, we never have enough. Each achievement is meaningless; we keep aspiring for bigger and better things.
